What 211 does in time of disaster:

During times of disaster, 211 Northeast Michigan plays a critical role in supporting residents, as well as state and local agencies and community organizations, by providing coordinated disaster navigation and resource connection. Our team serves as a central point of contact, ensuring that individuals and families can quickly access accurate information and essential services during emergencies.

We work directly with community members to identify their immediate needs and connect them to available resources such as shelter, food, utility assistance, and other critical support. When gaps in services are identified, we actively communicate with partner organizations, local officials, and emergency response teams to help mobilize or expand resources in impacted areas.

By serving as both a connector and a collaborator, 211 Northeast Michigan helps streamline communication, reduce confusion, and strengthen the overall community response—ensuring that no one is left without access to the help they need during times of crisis.

Disaster Intake & 211:

211 has launched a disaster specific centralized database that enables call specialists to collect and report real-time information such as damage to residents’ homes and/or properties during and after a disaster. This system allows us at 211 to document community impact in a consistent and organized way, ensuring that critical information is readily accessible to state and local officials.

By capturing detailed reports directly from affected residents, this provides decision-makers with a clearer picture of unmet needs across impacted areas. This data helps guide resource allocation, prioritize response efforts, and support requests for additional assistance or disaster declarations when necessary.

In addition to supporting government response, 211 strengthens coordination among community partners by identifying service gaps and emerging needs. This allows organizations to respond more effectively and ensures that assistance is directed where it is needed most. Ultimately, this newly launched system used by 211 statewide plays a vital role in accelerating recovery efforts and improving outcomes for residents affected by disasters.
